Configurable Art
Mobile-first e-commerce where collectors compose custom artworks through drag-and-drop
The Challenge
Felipe Pantone needed a platform where collectors could compose custom artworks by combining individual pieces on a digital board, then purchase and assemble them at home. The experience had to work seamlessly on mobile, where most collectors would discover and buy.
The core challenge: designing a drag-and-drop shopping cart inside the composition board itself. Users needed to arrange art pieces visually, see the final result in real-time, and complete checkout without leaving the creative flow.
Approach
I started with mobile-first wireframes to map the core interaction: browse pieces, drag them onto the board, adjust placement, and checkout. Working directly with Felipe Pantone, we validated the navigation structure and ensured the experience stayed simple despite the technical complexity.
Design System & Final Interface
Once the interaction model was validated, I built a complete design system with all UI components, visual assets, and screen states. The board interface balances creative freedom with clear guidance: showing piece availability, placement constraints, and cart status without cluttering the canvas.
System Components & Marketing
The design system covered all interaction states, responsive breakpoints, and edge cases. I also designed the landing page to introduce the concept and guide collectors into the configurator experience.
Impact
The platform launched successfully, enabling collectors worldwide to compose and purchase custom artworks entirely from their phones. The mobile-first approach proved critical: most users completed their compositions and checkout on mobile devices.
The integrated board-and-cart pattern reduced friction in the buying process, allowing users to stay in the creative flow from composition to purchase. The design system provided a foundation for future platform expansions and new artist collaborations.
